Essential Eclipse Plugins: Eclipse Color Theme


This is fun little plugin, one of the most popular on the Eclipse Marketplace, gives you a quick and easy way to apply a consistent, customized color theme to many of the Eclipse editors.

Eclipse gives you lots of control over syntax coloring already, but there are gaps in its features, and the themes do not easily cross types of editors, like Java, XML, Ant, Scala, etc.

This tool lets you apply a theme quickly and easily across all supported editors. Match your color theme to your ambient lighting, your corporate colors, your favorite team. Whatever strikes your fancy.


It is as easy as opening the Eclipse Preferences and, under Appearance, select Color Theme.

I also like that there is an active community of contributors, with more than 12,000 pre-made themes to select from (www.eclipsecolorthemes.org) Come up with a new one and share it with the world!

My biggest dislike with this plugin is that it is focused on the Eclipse editors and console. I like to have several Views open at once, for added context while I work, and would prefer to see my current theme applied across, say, the Outline or Package Explorer views, too. The different scheme takes away a little from the overall effect, I find.

Still, a nice plugin that I use on occasion, especially in a late-night programming session.

Git Reset in Eclipse

Using Git and the Eclipse IDE, you have a series of commits in your branch history, but need to back up to an earlier version. The Git Reset feature is a powerful tool with just a whiff of danger, and is accessible with just a couple clicks in Eclipse. In Eclipse, switch to the History view. In my example it shows a series of 3 changes, 3 separate committed versions of the Person file. The purpose of this post is to be a brain-dump for how we set up and used OpenCover and ReportGenerator command-line tools for code coverage analysis and reporting in our projects. Scala provides a rich Collections API. Let's look at the useful groupBy() function. What does groupBy() do? It takes a collection, assesses each item in that collection against a discriminator function, and returns a Map data structure. Each key in the returned map is a distinct result of the discriminator function, and the key's corresponding value is another collection which contains all elements of the original one that evaluate the same way against the discriminator function.
